DOBSON — Surry Central pulled out some close matches to defeat Elkin 6-3 in tennis.

The Lady Eagles previously beat the Lady Elks 7-2 in their first match of the season.

“It was very close,” Coach Dennis Miller said of the rematch. “Elkin came ready to play. … Elkin has improved a lot this go-round.”

In the first set, Central led in all six spots. Yet, the Elks won 21 games.

At the top spot, Marlee Wilmoth defeated Peyton Nicholson 6-4, 6-3.

Second seed Kennedy Dockery lost to Miracle Walters 6-3, 6-4. Walters was Elkin’s top seed at the start of the season and finished fourth in Mount Airy’s preseason invitational tournament.

Third seed Sommer Chilton beat Makayla Dimmette 6-4, 7-5.

Mikayla Cox won 6-4, 6-1 over Ally Gentry in the fourth-seed match. That match was even closer than the score, noted Miller; Gentry forced several deuces in games before losing.

Fifth seed Cassie Hoge won the first set 6-2, but then lost 2-6 in the second set to Julie Neumark. In the third-set tiebreaker, Neumark pulled out a lengthy 13-11 set.

Sixth seed Olivia Fowler won over Carolyn Blackburn 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, Wilmoth and Chilton lost a close match to Nicholson/Walters 9-7.

Dockery and Cox won 8-6 over Dimmette/Gentry. Fowler and Mallory Wilmoth won 9-7 over Neumark and Blackburn.

The Eagles were scheduled to play conference foe Carver today, but there was a scheduling issue. The first time the two schools should have met, Carver didn’t have a team yet.

The Yellow Jackets now have a four-player team, so the Eagles could play a double header when the two finally meet, said Miller.

Next up for Central is hosting South Stokes on Thursday.
