The second annual Ashe County Volunteer Fair is coming to Jefferson Station on Friday, Sept. 20.

Ashe County Volunteer Coordinator Glenda Luther said the fair is a way for people to know what opportunities are available in the area.

“A lot of people want to volunteer, but they don’t know where to get started,” Luther said.

This year, the Volunteer Fair, hosted by the Ashe County Volunteer Initiative Program, will be held in conjunction with the 11th Annual Quilt Fair hosted by the Ashe County Piecemakers Quilt Guild.

While the Quilt Fair will run all weekend, the volunteer fair will take place Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Multiple organizations will be represented at the fair including: Ashe Services for Aging, Ashe County Arts Council and A Safe Home for Everyone. All booths will have a direct affiliation to the County.

“Some of (the organizations) are regional,” Luther said. “But they are all connected to Ashe County.”

Luther said she was excited about the two fairs getting to work together and believes the collaboration will hope both events grow. With the volunteer fair being new, this collaboration will help get the word out.

“People (that come) in for the Quilt Fair will visit the Volunteer Fair and vise-versa,” she said. “We will both benefit from the people coming in.”

The idea for the collaboration came from when Luther and others were discussing where to hold the fair. When they decided on Jefferson Station, one of the caretakers mentioned the Quilt Fair occurring around the same time.

“I thought it was a great idea,” Luther said. “We contacted the president of the quilt guild and got the ball rolling.”

While attendees were few last year because of it being the inaugural fair, Luther believes that the event will grow and a higher awareness for volunteer initiatives will happen.

“We have a wonderful amount of volunteers in Ashe County and sometimes people want to volunteer in more than one place,” she said. “This will give them a good opportunity to see what else is out there.”

And while quilts and volunteering have very little in common, the event should still be a good time.

“I just hope everyone comes out and joins the fun,” Luther said. “I think it will be a fun event with us having it with the quilt fair.”
