Of all the articles that I have written about art, probably the most exciting and interesting opportunity that I have come across by far is one that allows the “creative” individual full possibility and potential of their “creative” product.

In this time of changing paradigms in how to market wares and to whom, there is a very interesting change becoming more and more prevalent that can allow someone with a great idea to actually gather financial momentum to make that idea a reality. It is the platform known as “Indiegogo” and also “Kickstarter.” Actually, two more of these types of platforms have surfaced, but the ones I have mentioned have been in existence for a good while now, and for good reason.

These “platforms” are crowd-funding arenas where an individual can contribute to a specific cause or project and help “projects” reach their goals without the encumbrance of sometimes unpleasant regulations imposed by banks or other lending institutions. It is a way to take one’s ideas directly “to the people” and get valuable feedback and support without big corporations being a part of the sum total.

Innumerable gadgets, items, travels, writings and media have come to life from these platforms – smoothly, effortlessly and spearheaded by the power of belief from their creators. One such platform helped a woman pay her mortgage and keep her home. Another funded a woman’s travels to a country to return a parcel brought home by her brother, who had passed away, and a movie was made of her journey.

Some of the projects are heart warming, some incredibly ingenious and others are just new and useful products for everyday consumption. On these sites, you can read the stories and see photos and video about why the project is so important to the creator and how it can be beneficial to others – or not.

Some are very entertaining in their presentation and some are very specific and direct in stating their goals. One woman’s idea for a product was “stolen” by a company much larger and seemingly much more “protected” with highly-paid lawyers who sued her as though she was the one who had high jacked the idea. She took the situation to a “platform,” stated her case for the masses to see and let them decide what should happen. Instead of raising the $15,000 that she needed to settle the case in court, she raised over $150,000 and donated the extra to an animal protection society. Justice was served for her as well as many animals who needed protection and placement in a safe environment.

I know about these platforms because I have put a project on Indiegogo. It was suggested to me by a network executive who is raising funds for a project of her own. This, she said, is the wave of the future. The time for people to speak and let their voices be heard for what they want to see occur.

As a marketing official for my own art- as well as that of others- I invite you to check out my site for the PBS art instruction show fund raiser which I am in the midst of. http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/487117/wdgi/4263492, or go to www.acorngallery.com and click on the project from there. It just gives you an opportunity to be a part of history – or “herstory”, and help open art ever more to the power of possibility, for everyone.
