It was a good day for the women’s tennis team on Tuesday. Ashe beat West Wilkes 9-0 for its first conference win, and even added a pair of exhibition match victories to cap off the afternoon.
“It was a good win for the team on the road. All players won their matches and most of them won easily,” said Head Coach Larry Dix.
All six singles matches were straight set wins for the Lady Huskies.
Top seeded Hallie Brown earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jenna Roten. Second seeded Maggie Witherspoon defeated Liz Walker, 6-1, 6-1, and third seeded freshman Grace Miller captured a 6-0, 6-2 win against Alexa Bumgarner.
Mary Austin Tugman won her fourth seeded match against McKayla Bumgarner by a 6-1, 6-0 tally. Ella Copeland and Erin Griffin rounded out the singles wins. Copeland was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Amanda Limon and Griffin scored a 6-0, 6-1 win over Christyn Craig.
The duo of Brown and Witherspoon took care of business against Roten and A. Bumgarner, winning 8-2.
The closest match of the day was in the second doubles match where Miller and Tugman held on for an 8-5 victory over Walker and M. Bumgarner. Copeland and Griffin scored an 8-2 win over Limon and Craig.
Ashe and West Wilkes played a pair of exhibition doubles matches. The Ashe team of Keely Caddell and Rae Zeller, as well as the duo of Callie Powell and Abbey Manley grabbed victories on the road.
“I was glad to see the players work on skills and strategies that we had discussed and practiced,” said Coach Dix. “They came to the net much more and controlled their shots by hitting angles and corners.”
Ashe is now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Next week, the Lady Huskies have a pair of home matches. Ashe will host perennial front-runner Elkin on Tuesday before wrapping up the week against Starmount on Thursday.
