The North Surry varsity volleyball team pounded away at Alleghany to finally clinch the set after a hard fought third match.

The Trojans took the first win by a score of 25-20; the Hounds then pulled out the next three game victories, 25-19, 25-20 and 25-10.

North Surry Volleyball Coach Shane Slate said, “We played in a little better rhythm tonight than we had in the first four matches. When things did not go our way after the first set, we were able to make plays instead of giving up free balls or making mistakes on routine plays.”

Slate said this was the first match where Greyhounds had a lot of balance on the stat sheet which means they were able to run a better offense and be in a better position defensively.

He said, “Alleghany forced us to adjust to their cut shots and tips, and we did a pretty good job of answering that style of play.”

The Trojans grabbed an early lead in game three and both teams volleyed hard against the other. Hound Malaya Johnson, who went 19/20 in serves and led the team with four aces, registered a kill for the Hounds and tied the game 6-6. Johnson, then served and put the Hounds ahead 8-6. The Trojans retaliated by getting back the serve and pounding for another tie of 8-8.

Hound Morgan Hawks put the team in the lead after getting the serve. Teamwork both in the back and at the net resulted in a Hound run and a 16-10 Hound lead.

The Trojans called a timeout at the six-point lead.

The Hounds maintained the lead the rest of the match, but near the game’s end, let the Trojans pull within three points with a score of 23-20 Hounds. The final was 25-20.

Overall Taylor Hill lead the Hounds with 20 kills and also recorded second in digs with 16. Abby Golding led with 19 digs, Morgan Hawks led with 37 assists, and Erin March and Johnson led with five blocks.

Hound Johnson led in aces and served 19/20.

Johnson got the final serve in game three and aced the Hounds to the final victory.

North Surry is 2-3 for the season and will play Watauga at home in their second meeting on Tuesday. Watauga won in the last meeting by a score of 3-1 on 8/20.

The Hounds will take on Watauga today at home, and then plays Reagan Thursday at North Surry.
