Pickin' in the Park, the midway event for the community reading of “Refuge,” is focusing on the music within the novel.

“We decided this year's community read could have a midway event,” Suzanne Moore, the county librarian said. “This midway event is a party where we can celebrate the songs of the book.”

The Ashe County library's website has a playlist consisting of the music from the book, which has tracks from Doc Watson, Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie and others.

For the event itself, musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments, perform and have a good time. Anyone is invited to perform or watch.

“You can bring spoons if you don't have anything else to play,” Moore said. “Anything that can make music, bring it.”

Moore said she has gone to several music events in the county encouraging musicians to attend.

The picking will have a traditional setting and will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The event will take place at the picnic pavilion at West Jefferson Park, behind the library.

It is free to attend, play or watch, but music will not be the only focus of the literary event.

Moore said the first two Little Free Libraries, or “twigs” will be revealed at the event. The twigs, built by the Ashe County Home Builders Association, will be placed at Phipps Store in Lansing and Todd Mercantile.

The community read has been the subject of several events in the area. Human readings occur at both the library and Phipps Store, there was a kickoff party on Aug. 6 and on Sept. 17 “Refuge” author Dot Jackson, will lead a discussion of her novel at the library.

“This is the first Pickin' in the Park,” Moore said. “It's because it fit with this year's novel.”

Moore said there will also be free ice cream provided by the Ashe County Library and The Candy Shack in West Jefferson.

The readings will continue at Phipps Store every Tuesday through Sept. 10. Volunteers start reading aloud from the book at 6 p.m.

The community read of Dot Jackson's “Refuge” is part of the annual On the Same Page Literary Festival that will be held from Sept. 17-21.
