Ever heard of a “Human Audio-Book?” Well, they’re right here in Ashe County, and they are your friends and neighbors.

This year’s Community Read book is “Refuge” by Dot Jackson. Everyone is invited to share the book-reading experience together.

Check out a copy at the Ashe County Public Library, or purchase one at the Ashe County Arts Council in West Jefferson. Then, join in the community-wide discussion of this fascinating and poignant novel, which takes place in a fictional mountain community — not unlike Ashe County — during the Great Depression.

Serving as the prologue event to this fall’s On the Same Page Literary Festival, the Community Read also features many wonderful events through August and into September, including our Human Audio Book readings of “Refuge” Aug. 13, 20 and 29, and Sept. 3 and 10.

Come on out to the Phipps Store 2425 Silas Creek Road in Lansing where volunteers will read sections of “Refuge” beginning at 6 p.m..

Phipps Store regular Charlotte Council said about this year’s Community Read: “… I couldn’t put it down. I felt like I was right there beside Cousin Sen. with every step she made. This is a book that earned a spot on my bookshelf.”

Phipps Store proprietor James “Dawg” Wood has started reading “Refuge,” and is excited about hosting the Human Audio Books.

“I’ve been busy with my art so much that I know I haven’t read a book in more than a year. Refuge is a good book, I’m really enjoying it!” Wood said.

Continuing the celebration of this year’s Community Read, 7 p.m. Aug. 27 will be “Pickin’ in the Park” at the West Jefferson Town Park picnic pavilion behind the Ashe County Public Library.

Enjoy free ice cream and bring your instruments, or just listen — everyone’s invited to join in for the music jam. We expect to hear some of the music that plays a central part in “Refuge” during this evening’s event.

Wrapping up the Community Read, and kicking-off the On the Same Page Literary Festival, “Refuge” author Dot Jackson comes to the Ashe County Library 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, to talk about writing and her book. She’ll be on hand to talk with readers, autograph books, and answer questions.

For more information about the Community Read, go to the Ashe County Public Library website at http://www.ashelibrary.com, or check in at the www.onthesamepagefestival.org, where you can find out about the Community Read and the On the Same Page Literary Festival.

You can also call the Library at (336)846-2041 or the Arts Council at (336)846-ARTS (2787).

All events are sponsored by the Ashe County Public Library and the Ashe County Arts Council, and supported by many generous donors including: Skyline Membership Corporation, Friends of the Ashe County Public Library, South Arts, Art Works, North Carolina Arts Council, Ashe County Piecemakers Quilt Guild, Ashe County Farmers’ Market, County of Ashe, the Town of West Jefferson, and many individual donors called Page Turners, all of whom make the Community Read and On the Same Page Literary Festival possible.
