ELKIN - Rising senior Brandon Bradley will be hitting the field with some of the best players from around the region this weekend in the prestigious Blue-Grey North Carolina Baseball Classic in Greensboro.

Bradley was one of 44 ball-players from across the state to be selected, but was one of just six players to earn a nomination without a tryout, garnering attention based solely on his performance on the field.

“I’m glad to have this opportunity to play. I just want to have fun and to be able to say I did it,” he explained. “Coach [Chase] Swisher got a letter in the mail from the state committee telling me I made it - it is a big accomplishment to be one of those players.”

Bradley was Surry County’s lone honoree and will join Forbush’s Brad Dzeskewicz at the Classic as the only two area players selected.

“It means a lot [to be Elkin’s only representative]. I want to do big things for Elkin,” he said. “I’m the first person from Elkin to be selected since Dakota Longworth in 2010. I’m real good friends with his brother, and he’s been helping me out a lot through it.”

Bradley will join Team Richmond in the four-team tournament at NewBridge Bank Park in downtown Greensboro, home of the single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers, Saturday and Sunday.

Team Richmond will square off with Team Charlotte on Day One in a 10-inning contest before taking on Dzeskewicz and Team Greensboro Sunday at 9 a.m. Team Raleigh rounds out the field.

Bradley hit a team-high .375 to earn a Mountain Valley Conference honorable mention this past season. The rising senior added 11 RBIs, one home run, while compiling a .519 on-base percentage.

As a pitcher, Bradley went 2-5 in 13 appearances for the Buckin’ Elks, with a 4.16 ERA. His .061 ERA was among the conference leaders for the majority of the season.

Dzeskewicz also garnered a honorable mention nod this past year serving as the ace of Forbush’s staff. The rising senior posted a 6-1 mark on the season with a 1.92 ERA - both in the top three in the MVAC.

“I’m proud to be able to play,” Bradley said. “I’m just thankful for my parents for teaching me how to play baseball and my grandparents and everyone that has helped me.

“I’m just going to go out there and try my best and have fun with it and see where it takes me,” he added.
