In less than a month, the youths of the area will be returning to the classrooms for another year of soaking in knowledge and wisdom.

For some, they’ve been around the school much of the summer. The athletes spend much of their “time off” in the weight rooms staying in peak shape between seasons, and some of those dedicated to academics may have spent time at camps or other learning opportunities that likely don’t require testing at the end of the session.

Then there are the students who spent the summer working more hours than they can during the school year at their jobs, or for some it was time to hang out at the pool, on the beach, at summer camp, or at friends’ houses relaxing.

Football season is getting into high gear as players and coaches hold scrimmages and partial-team matchups, other athletes will soon begin official practices, and everyone else is gearing up with shopping the back-to-school sales for school supplies and fall clothing.

This weekend will be a perfect time for shopping as the state is holding its annual Sales Tax Holiday Friday through Sunday, and in addition to no sales tax, many stores will have additional sales on items.

Those savings opportunities are not isolated to the big department and box stores, as several downtown and area small businesses also will have no sales taxes charged on exempt items and bonus discounts.

Whether you have a student or are a student going to school or just need a few things for yourself, this weekend is the time to buy.

In addition to shopping for personal items, area residents also have a chance to give back to the community by attending the Rock the Runway Fashion Show downtown Saturday. This is the second year downtown businesses have hosted the event, which features fashions and accessories available at their stores.

Those attending are asked to bring nonperishable items for admission that can be used in the Flat Rock Elementary Dragon Pack program, such as microwavable spaghetti bowls and soups, crackers, fruit packs and snacks, oatmeal and cereal bars, canned meat, single serve vegetable cups and fruit cups, snack cakes, instant potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pasta and rice dinners and individual packs of cookies and other snacks.

A monetary donation also will be accepted for entry to the fashion show which will be held at Old North State Winery at 1 p.m.

So while you are out and about this weekend, think about the kids who might not have the means to back-to-school shop or have enough food to get through the weekend at home and support the downtown effort, or another nonprofit that benefits the students in the county. Most of the schools have backpack programs or bins where they collect school supplies for kids who can’t afford them.
