Elkin’s Board of Education congratulated the Elkin shooting team Monday as part of its “Good News” segment of the monthly board meeting.

Elkin’s team placed second in the State tournament for archery with a total score of 987 out of 1,000.

Elkin High Assistant Principal Casey Morrison introduced coaches Jack Richardson and Wesley Simmons who both spoke to the board and assembled audience about the first year of the team. Several members of the team were able to attend also.

The team competed in archery, shotgun shooting, rifle shooting, and hunter skills: a written test of all the knowledge accumulated on firearms, archery and outdoor information and skills.

Richardson said the team had a bright future in Elkin. Much of the 2012-13 team will be returning in the fall.

Roughly 60 students - both male and female - turned out in January for the initial team selection.

Practicing and scrimmaging resulted in the March 23 selection of Hunter Simmons, Austin Wood, Carson Billings, Noah Smith, Andrew Combs and Tristan Grubbs as team members. Dillon Wood and Brandon Welborn were selected as alternates.

Members of the Elkin team scored well enough at the regional shooting competition to be invited to the state tournament. They continued that scoring at state against 54 other schools - 575 students total in competition.

Two members of Elkin’s team shot well enough to compete for first place in archery at the state event. Austin Wood and Noah Smith both shot perfect 200s in shotgun.

Carson Billing’s mother had tears in her eyes as she told the board how important the shooting team was to the community, the school and to her family. She said that Carson was diagnosed with a heart condition that prevented him from playing in high school athletics. Only when the shooting team was created did he have an athletic outlet to compete in.

Carson Billings was one of the two archers who competed at the state level.

Billings ultimately won first place in the state for individual archery, shooting a perfect 200 and 11 “X’s” out of 20 to top the competition. An “X” is the center of the target, roughly the size of a penny Richardson said.

Billings has been part of the team since its inception in 2010.

Richardson and Simmons took photos with the team members who could attend Monday’s meeting and with Morrison. Individual certificates were awarded to each team member for their success in the shooting sports.

Richardson ended the award dedication as he began it: saying the future looked very bright for Elkin’s shooting team.
