Mural creation begins Friday
A renowned mural artist is making his way to Elkin to design a new creation.
“We have a mural artist coming to Elkin to enhance businesses that are participating in our Mural Grant program through the Main Street Advisory Board this year. It is the first time they have offered this grant to the downtown community,” said Laura Gaylord, Main Street and community manager for the Town of Elkin.
Best known as a muralist, Michael Brown has completed many murals in cities across North Carolina and in Virginia, West Virginia, New York, Florida, Chicago and Baltimore.
“I am starting the process on Friday,” said Brown of Carrboro, N.C. “I’ll be taking measurements, possibly some scraping, and other details that are related to the first day of working on the section. It’s all part of the process.”
The mural will be painted on the wall of Elkin Antiques and Collectibles building, a one-story building that borders Standard Street.
According to Gaylord, it is the first of four murals that the Main Street Advisory Board has been approved for downtown to be completed this year.
“I think it would be great to photograph the mural in a few stages so folks can see the progress and maybe even go watch him paint,” said Gaylord.
Brown indicated that during each phase of the project he’s focused on sitting with and engaging with members of the community.
“This project is about them,” he said.
