State’s June employment figures released

The state’s seasonally adjusted June unemployment rate was 8.8 percent, remaining unchanged from May’s revised rate. The national rate also remained unchanged at 7.6 percent.


North Carolina’s June 2013 unemployment rate was 0.8 of a percentage point lower than a year ago. The number of people employed decreased 10,958 over the month to 4,292,497, and increased 29,341 over the year. The number of people unemployed increased 596 over the month to 416,767, and declined 33,782 over the year.


Seasonally adjusted Total Nonfarm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, increased 5,700 to 4,048,400 in June. The major industry with the largest over-the-month increase was Profes-sional & Business Services at 3,700, followed by Construction, 1,800; Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 1,600; Financial Activities, 1,100; and Information, 900. Major industries to experience decreases were Other Services, 1,600; Government, 600; Education & Health Services, 600; Leisure & Hospitality Services, 300; and Manufac-turing, 300. Mining & Logging employment remained flat over the month.


Since June 2012, Total Nonfarm jobs gained 60,800 with the Total Private sector growing by 61,100 and Gov-ernment declining by 300. The largest over-the-year increase of major industries was in Leisure & Hospitality Services, 25,400, followed by Professional & Business Services, 14,600; Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 9,600; Education & Health Services, 6,800; Financial Activities, 3,600; Information, 3,000; Manufacturing, 1,000; and Other Services, 200. Major industries to experience decreases over the year were Construction, 2,800; Govern-ment, 300; and Mining & Logging, 300.


The next unemployment update is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30, 2013 when the county unemployment rates for June 2013 will be released.
