Members of Forbush High School HOSA were part of the 36th Annual HOSA National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn.

This year’s conference was the largest in the history of HOSA with just over 7,400 registered delegates, 62 Health Care Symposiums, five interactive workshops, and 56 competitive events. Attendees included Bethany Hunter, Dylan Edwards and Advisor Billy Sapp.

Bethany Hunter competed in the Nursing Assistant event where she advanced as a second-round finalist out of 80 competitors. Dylan Edwards, NC HOSA District 7 State Officer led the NC Delegation and attended HOSA University 201-A leadership workshop for state officers across the nation. Billy Sapp served as a Section Leader for the Physical therapy event held at Belmont University.

Forbush HOSA received Chapter Awards for participating in National HOSA Week and an Award of Merit for their financial support and volunteerism to the HOSA National Service Project- Cystic Fibrosis. Dylan Edwards also received the Barbara James Service Award for his outstanding Volunteer Service. He has completed over 125 service hours at WFBH.

Additional highlights of the conference included the Keynote Speaker, Dr. Ben Carson, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and author of Gifted Hands and “Think Big.”

Dr. Carson shared the story of his childhood dream of becoming a physician. This seemed impossible growing up in a single parent home, in dire poverty, making poor grades, having a bad temper, and a low self esteem. Carson’s mother with only a 3rd grade education decided to “turn off” the television and challenge her sons to read.

She had them read at least two books per week from the public library. Carson himself started to see his life begin to turn around. He challenged the HOSA Delegation to “put down” their electronics and read. Carson also challenged the HOSA Delegates to work toward a common goal improve the nation.

Another conference guest speaker was Catherine Oakar from the Department of Health and Human Services show spoke on the Affordable Healthcare Act and urged the delegates to learn more about the Affordable Healthcare Act by visiting Healthcare.gov.

Attendance at the 36th Annual HOSA National Leadership Conference would not be possible without donations and financial support.
