RONDA - Brandi Parks was nearly perfect for the Lady Cardinals in their postseason opener.

Parks flirted with a no-hitter to power second-seeded East Wilkes to a 5-0 victory over No. 7 Starmount Wednesday night in the first round of the Mountain Valley Conference tournament.

Mackenzie Hutchens broke up the no-hit bid with a lead-off single in the seventh, but Parks rebounded and finished off the two-hit shutout. Parks racked up 13 strikeouts in a dominating performance in the circle.

Hannah Brown and Payton Lyons paced the Cards offensively with three hits apiece. Lyons added a pair of RBIs, while Ashley Wagoner finished 2-for-4.

Rachel Wagoner recorded Starmount’s other hit in the seventh in a losing effort.

East Wilkes advances to Friday’s semifinal against second-seeded Forbush in West Jefferson.
