General Education Development (GED) students from across Surry and Yadkin counties were introduced to the Surry Community College campus recently with a campus tour along with information about how to continue their education at SCC.

GED students from the Learning Center in Dobson, The Pilot Center in Pilot Mountain, the Elkin Center in Elkin, the Jones Resource Center in Mount Airy, and the Yadkin Center in Yadkinville attended the event, which was hosted by the Educational Opportunity Center on April 24.

Fifty-four students participated in the annual event and received information on college enrollment, a spring tour of SCC’s beautiful campus, door prizes donated by Wal-Mart, and a delicious lunch at the Knight’s Grill. The students also completed practice admission applications.

“The tour is beneficial to Surry Community College because it is our goal to enroll these GED students in college upon completion of their GED,” said Kasey Martin, Coordinator of the Educational Opportunity Center. “By providing the tour, we hope that students, who may otherwise be intimidated by a college campus, will see how friendly we are at SCC and how easy we can make the transition for them from GED student to college student.”

The Educational Opportunity Center provides assistance for transitioning students who have been in the GED environment and now want to go college. Martin provides weekly workshops to GED students at each of SCC’s locations.

“During these workshops, I provide information on admissions, financial aid, how to choose a career, personality testing, and the programs offered at SCC. “By providing the tour, students get to visit the campus, meet some of the wonderful staff, and see where and how all of the things we discuss take place.”

Martin sums up entry from GED to college enrollment in eight steps: 1) Earn your GED; 2) Determine what you would like to be when you grow up; 3) Choose a program of study; 4) Apply for admissions; 5) Request transcripts; 6) Apply for financial aid; 7) Complete the placement test; and 8) Enroll.
