SPARTA - With the regular season coming to a close, Starmount rode the strong arm and bat of Luke Shore to a crucial victory Tuesday night in Sparta.

Shore powered the Rams past 1A-leading Alleghany 11-5 as Starmount continues its late-season surge up the Mountain Valley Conference standings.

The sophomore finished 3-for-5 on the night with two runs and a RBI to lead the Rams offensively. Shore also fired six stellar innings on the bump, striking out a season-high 11 batters, while allowing four runs (three earned).

Offensively, Starmount racked up a season-best 15 hits on the night, with eight of the nine starters collecting a base hit.

Tanner Mathis turned in a perfect performance at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Samuel Stone and Ben Combs added two RBIs. Zack Worley and Caleb West tacked on a pair of hits apiece.

With the win, the Rams improved to 8-6 in league play, tying the Trojans for third overall in the standings. Starmount secured the No. 3 2A seed, as Wilkes Central (12-2) and Forbush (11-3) battle for the top slot with two games remaining.

Starmount returns to the field tonight against East Wilkes in Ronda before returning home Tuesday against North Wilkes in the regular-season finale.
