Elkin Mayor Lestine Hutchens proclaimed April 25, 2013 Red Hat Society Day in honor of the local and international Red Hat Society.

Hutchens made the announcement April 8 and encouraged citizens to celebrate the Red Hat Society’s mission by supporting and encouraging everyone in the five ideals of the society: fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment, and fitness.

The Yadkin Valley Red Hatters, the area’s local chapter of the international society, requested the action from Mayor Hutchens to highlight its history and reputation as a charitable service in the community. The chapter gives both monetarily and through volunteer hours to benefit the local citizens.

The Red Hat Society is dedicated to greeting middle age with nerve and humor, accepting that silliness is the comedic relief of life, according to Hutchens. The organization refers to itself now as a world-wide “disorganization” of ladies dedicated to proving there is life and fun after turning 50.

Hutchens said ladies gain a bond of affection in the society, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes them.

The group, both internationally and locally, turned 15 years old April 15. It was originally inspired by Jenny Joseph poem entitled “Warning,” which depicted an older woman in purple clothing with a red hat. Today the ladies still celebrate the poem by wearing the bright and colorful attire.
