BOONVILLE - Looking to pick up critical 2A victories with the regular season winding down, Starmount’s baseball and softball teams split a double-header with Wilkes Central Tuesday night.
The Lady Rams earned an all-important conference win after topping the Eagles 5-0, while the Rams dropped an 11-1 decision to Central on the baseball diamond.
Starmount won its second straight game behind ace Olivia Greene.
After throwing 10 dominating innings in Friday’s extra-inning win over Elkin, Greene fired a shutout Tuesday to lead the Lady Rams.
Starmount improved to 4-8 on the year with the win and tied Ashe County in the Mountain Valley Conference standings for the third 2A slot.
On the baseball diamond, Wilkes Central ace Austin Staley silenced the red-hot Rams with a dominating performance on the mound.
Staley scattered a pair of hits over five stellar innings, while striking out 12, to lead the Eagles. Samuel Stone and Jeremy Whitaker collected the Rams’ only hits as Stone plated Zack Worley for the lone run.
Central capitalized on five Starmount errors en route to the 11-1 victory.
The Rams saw their five-game league winning streak come to an end with the loss as they fell to 6-6 on the year. Starmount holds a two-game lead over Ashe County for the third 2A spot.
Both squads return to action tonight against Yadkin County rival Forbush.
