The Austin Volunteer Fire Department located at 7170 Austin Traphill Road will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, April 20 at 11 a.m.

“Lexington style pork barbecue plates are going for $6.50 per plate,” said Austin fire chief Billy Vanhoy. “Each plate includes BBQ pork, slaw, baked beans, a roll, and we’re even tossing in dessert.”

Fire department volunteers are also selling advance tickets. Tickets can also be purchased at McGrady’s Cafe, Triplett Grocery, L & A Emergency Equipment, and Thurmond Grocery.

The Austin Volunteer Fire Department started in 1958 and is known to its firefighters as Station 34. The Austin Volunteer Fire Department provides emergency services for over 1600 residents.

Chief Vanhoy is the grandson to the department’s first fire chief, C.L. Poplin. Poplin, who retired in 1992.

“50 years later, calls are still the same. Cat is in a tree, or trees in a roadway. We have 29 volunteer firefighters and they respond to each call,” said Vanhoy. “The department also provides mutual aid services to surrounding fire departments. The raised money this Saturday is used to offset expenses that arise, like equipment to help keep our volunteers safe.”
