The Yadkin Valley Rotary Club is offering its annual scholarship opportunity to students in the area.

“This is our second year of offering a scholarship to three students: one each from Elkin, Starmount, and East Wilkes,” said Warren Bates, a Rotary Club member. The scholarship is funded by the Yadkin Valley Rotary Club, and then we do get some money from the local Walmart as well.”

“The scholarships are going to be $750 apiece. We are asking the kids to submit an application and their guidance counselors have the application. It needs to be submitted by April 15.”

So far there have been a couple students from Starmount, but none from the other schools.

“The criteria that we use: the Rotary motto is ‘service above self,’ and so what we are saying is that with this scholarship we want somebody to have a 3.0 grade point average because we want them to have a good chance of being successful in school.”

“But really the overriding criteria is more about service above self and giving back to the community,” he said.

Bates said the Club wanted to highlight those students who may not have received many academic awards but who had served the community well.

Students will be awarded their scholarships at each school’s awards ceremony.

Elkin will have theirs May 14 at 7 p.m. Starmount’s is May 10 in the morning, and East Wilkes will hold theirs on May 20 at 6:30 p.m.
