WEST JEFFERSON - Starmount racked up its fourth-straight Mountain Valley Conference victory Tuesday night against Ashe County behind senior leader Tanner Mathis.

Mathis powered the Rams to the 5-2 win with a solid performance on the mound and at the dish.

The senior finished a triple shy of a cycle, collecting three hits in four at-bats with a single, a double and a solo shot. Mathis also picked up the save on the bump, closing the door with perfect sixth and seventh innings to preserve the victory.

Blake Cheek earned the win with five innings of one-hit ball. The sophomore allowed one earned run with three strikeouts to pick up his first ‘W’ of the year.

Offensively, the Rams recorded nine hits on the night, led by Mathis and Ben Combs (2-for-4 with a RBI). Zack Worley ripped an RBI double in the game, while Jeremy Whitaker added a run-scoring base hit.

Starmount evened its conference mark at 5-5 with the win, moving up the league standings with the crucial 2A triumph.

The Rams will look to continue their surge tonight against Battle of the Bridge rival Elkin in Boonville.
