MILLERS CREEK - Starmount ran into the softball juggernaut that is West Wilkes Tuesday night.
The Mountain Valley Conference-leading Blackhawks cruised to the convincing 10-2 victory to stay perfect in league play at 10-0 in front of the home crowd.
West ace Courtney Lackey silenced the Lady Rams, allowing just three hits in a complete-game gem to pick up the win.
Starmount struck first against Lackey, pushing across a surprising run in the top of the first on a Rachel Wagoner double. But then West got stingy.
The Rams were sat down in order in four frames, including the fourth, fifth and sixth, and only managed two base hits over the final six innings after the strong first.
Mackenzie Hutchens ripped a double down the line in the third, but was stranded at second.
Down 10-1 in the seventh, the Rams loaded the bases against Lackey to make things interesting. After Wagoner and Alisha Baity drew walks and Christy Reavis reached on an error, Angel Couch brought home a run on a RBI single to left.
But Lackey buckled down and slammed the door to preserve the 10-2 victory.
Starmount, now 3-6 in league play, look to bounce back this week against 2A rival Ashe County Tuesday night and local nemisis Elkin Friday night.
