On Thursday, April 4, 2013, Foy Eugene Cassell, 91, of Hillsville, was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Born in Hillsville on November 27, 1921 to Nancy Edith Goad and Luther Bowman, Mr. Cassell was a decorated World War II veteran, and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star for his bravery on the battlefield during the Pacific Theater of Operations. He enlisted in the Army on August 28, 1942 and served until he was honorably discharged on November 9, 1945. Mr. Cassell retired as a jailer for the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department. It was there that he began his true passion, ministering to others and sharing the love of Christ. Over the years Mr. Cassell served as a lay minister at local nursing homes and various churches in the community, fulfilling what he believed was the most important mission of all – spreading the gospel. He was a long time member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Hillsville, and True Vine Baptist Church, Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Mr. Cassell was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post and Carroll County Senior Citizens. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and visiting the elderly who were homebound of in nursing homes. Mr. Cassell is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Violet June Hendrick Cassell, his daughters, Linda C. Turpin (Willis E. Turpin, Jr.), Dublin, Sharon Kay Schlesinger (Morris Schlesinger), Hillsville, Mildred E. Cassell, Dublin, and Karen Gail Bowman (Eddie Ray Bowman), Galax. He is also survived by his sisters, Shelby Jean Barbour, Salem, Mildred Walker, Brandywine, WV, his brothers, William R. Goad, Salem and Marion V. Bowman, Campbellsville, Kentucky, his brother-in-law, Fred E. Hendrick, Pulaski, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, on Saturday, April 6, 2013, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Memorial services will be held at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Dewey Felts and Rev. Raleigh Haynes officiating. Burial will follow in the Gladesboro Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Hillsville, Virginia, True Vine Baptist Church, Mt. Airy, North Carolina, or to the charity of you choice. Mr. Cassell will be remembered for his kind and humble spirit and his care and concern for his family and those around him. He spent a lifetime looking after those he loved and setting an example of honor and integrity for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to follow. The family would like to thank the caring staff of Heritage Hall-Laurel Meadows for their caring and compassionate care during his illness.
