Lady Falcons slide past Eagles in nine innings

EAST BEND - After eight scoreless innings of softball, the Lady Falcons changed all that in the home-half of the ninth.
Knotted in a 0-0 tie, Forbush made a late charge in the bottom of the ninth. Taylor Wooten smacked a lead-off double to deep center, making her way third after the ball was misplayed in the outfield.
Shey Steelman followed with a fielder’s choice grounder to the mound before Savannah Henry drew a walk to load the bases.
Savannah Yale then ripped a hard grounder to second that allowed Wooten to race home and slide past Wilkes Central for the thrilling 1-0 victory in extra innings.
“I’m glad we came out on top,” head coach Rachel Davis explained. “We just couldn’t find the holes today hitting. But that last inning, we were hitting it hard. They gave us a little bit and we took advantage. Overall, it was a great ballgame.
“They gave us a gift there at the end and we were able to execute on it,” she added.
With a strong defense behind her, Steelman picked up the win in the circle. The senior powered the Falcons to the victory with a complete-game shutout, limiting Central’s potent offense.
“Shey did great today,” Davis explained. “She’s been mixing it up more lately. Kelly Moran did great behind the plate calling pitches. But the past two ballgames, Shey has really stepped up her game as far as mixing up her pitches and keeping the batters off-balanced, which is key.”
With the win, Forbush kept pace in the tight race for the Mountain Valley Conference crown.
The Falcons improved to 6-2 on the year with the win, taking over sole possession of first place among 2A clubs. Forbush trails East Wilkes (8-0) and East Wilkes (6-2) in the conference standings.
“We’re in a good position now,” Davis explained. “To make it through the first half only losing two games to 1A teams, I’m glad for that as far as playoff goes.”
The Lady Falcons host East Wilkes Tuesday night looking to continue their recent surge.
