CANA, Va. — A single-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon at the four-mile marker on northbound Interstate 77 sent two victims to the hospital in critical condition.

According to Trooper Alan Vaughan with the Virginia State Police, the car involved was traveling on I-77 North when “it appeared the gentleman fell asleep, ran off the road on the right, hit a rock embankment and overturned several times.”

A man in his mid-30s, who was a backseat passenger, was ejected out of the back window, Vaughan reported. He was airlifted in critical condition to Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The driver, a 66-year-old man from Ohio, and a 62-year-old woman were entrapped in the vehicle, and it required rescuers to free them. The woman also was airlifted to Baptist in critical condition.

The driver and a 6-year-old boy were transported by ambulance to Baptist with minor injuries, Vaughan said.

The names of those involved have not been released.

Vaughan said the driver has been charged with reckless driving for failure to maintain control of his vehicle.

According to Jason Busick, 2nd lieutenant of the Cana Rescue Squad, what originally was reported as a multi-car accident was only a single-car accident. He said a minor injury occurred in a vehicle that “slammed on its brakes” as the accident occurred.

Interstate 77 northbound lanes were closed for a short period of time while victims were airlifted from the scene.

In total, four EMS units, three Cana Rescue Squad units, one unit from Carroll Fire and Rescue, and one truck from the Cana Volunteer Fire Department, plus two medical helicopters, responded to the scene of the accident.
