On Saturday March 16, Ashe County Middle School had two teams compete in the regional Science Olympiad tournament in Hickory.

The varsity team performed well and placed second overall. Through winning and placing among the top teams the regional level, ACMS will be invited for the 10th consecutive year to compete at the state Science Olympiad tournament held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh on April 26-27.

The regional tournament consisted of 20 total teams from 16 counties. The competition challenged students in events covering all disciplines of science.

Students spent months preparing for events including building a boomilever, musical instruments, vehicles, gliders, and rockets. They also had to study and master events such as astronomy, food science, diseases, crime scene investigations, rocks, meteorology, glaciers, map reading, science lab processes, electricity, and advanced physics.

This group of students has faced incredible odds so far, losing roughly 80 percent of class time since Christmas. Through hard work and extended hours — staying after school, working on their own, and coming in on Saturdays — this group has risen to the occasion.

Now the students begin preparation for an even more rigorous competition in Raleigh. Top teams from all 11 regions in the state will compete to win a chance to advance to the national tournament. Both teams were also recognized for their outstanding team spirit for the third year in a row.

Ashe County Middle School has always performed well, but to win the spirit award teams must show a positive attitude in all aspects of competition including sportsmanship and positive attitude. Middle school students went out of their way to “thank volunteers”, “help other teams”, “show support for their own team”, and “lend equipment to and help competitors.” Before presenting the award, the director said “he had never received so many positive compliments” about a team.

Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for achievement in science. The tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of events for which students prepare during the year. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various scientific disciplines of technology, chemistry, biology, earth science, and physics.

Science Olympiad is recognized as a model program in the National Science Standards by the National Research Council.
