Matthews sets home run mark at Charleston Southern
CHARLESTON - Former Starmount softball standout Jana Matthews made history earlier this month.
Matthews, a senior star at Charleston Southern, cranked her 28th career home run March 16 against Longwood to become the program’s all-time home run leader. The senior broke a tie with former teammate Megan Lombard, who set the record last season with 27 longballs.
Matthews turned on a 2-1 pitch and smacked a solo shot to right field to lead off the sixth inning against the Lancer, setting the new mark in Charleston.
The senior has started all 30 games for the Buccaneers, boasting a fourth-best .235 batting average on the year with three home runs and 11 RBIs.
The 2009 graduate was a four-time All-Mountain Valley Conference player at Starmount, garnering all-state and all-district honors following her junior and senior season. Matthews was also named the MVAC Player of the Year her senior year.
Matthews is the daughter of Eddie and Melanie Matthews of Boonville.
