The Elkin High School National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) will hold its first induction ceremony Monday, April 22, 2013, from 1:30-3 p.m. in the Dixon Auditorium.

These students will be recognized as outstanding in career and technical education.

The NTHS was chartered for the first time at Elkin High in May of 2012, and CTE (Career and Technical Education) teacher Beth Felts agreed to sponsor the society. According to Felts, “The NTHS is the highest international academic recognition available for Career and Technical Education students. More than $150,000 in scholarships are awarded each year to NTHS members.”

Felts also pointed out that membership in the NTHS is an important career and professional investment recognized by education, business, and industry. The NTHS has partnered with student organizations such as BPA, DECA, FCCLA, FBLA/PBL, HOSA, and SkillsUSA in promoting excellence in career and technical education. These CTE student organizations help students to build career skills through hands-on experiences, service learning, and competitive events.

Last year the Elkin High School CTE program was named number one in the state based on CTE end of course exam scores. Elkin High School also has the highest percentage of students in North Carolina with CTE concentrators meeting the WorkKeys state standards.

The WorkKeys test is a job skills assessment which measures “real world” skills that employers believe are critical to job success. It can enable a person to earn a Career Readiness Certification which is a credential that recognizes skill levels in reading, applied math, and locating information – foundational skills that are required in 90% of today’s jobs. Regardless of the industry, the Career Readiness Certification provides candidates with evidence of valuable work skills.

Elkin has eight CTE Teachers: Kali Teague, Robin Hooper, Patty Crosswhite, Chaise Swisher, Jill Woodie, Joe McCulloch. Clarence Edwards, and Beth Felts. They also have three coordinators: Kim Parks, Patsy Burgess, and CTE director Barbara Long.

All of Elkin’s CTE teachers were recognized by the Surry County Commissioners on Monday, March 18, for their outstanding work.
