Jonesville’s Board of Commissioners voted Friday to allow hunters to use archery equipment in both the Urban Archery season and the normal hunting season in North Carolina.

Hunters will not be allowed to hunt on Sundays.

The measure passed 3-1, with Gene Pardue not voting due to his status as Mayor Pro-Tem. Commissioners Tracy Wall, Andy Green, and Danny Lewis were in favor, with Wayne Moore opposed.

The season will run from Sept. 7 through Jan. 1, then pick up again in mid-January with the Urban season ending in mid-February. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has not yet released the dates for the 2014 urban season.

Commissioners met Friday morning to finalize the details of the Board’s March 11 vote to allow archery hunting inside town limits. Under the new law Jonesville would participate in the Urban Archery season, but the lingering question of whether hunters could bowhunt in town limits during the regular hunting season was still unanswered. The board tabled the decision until the Friday meeting.

After further discussion an added consideration was introduced. Wall told the board he had been approached by a Jonesville resident who had commented on Sunday hunting and the dread of seeing a dead deer while on his way to church one morning. Wall asked the board if it would be willing to prohibit hunting on Sundays.

Green said he was still in favor of the maximum season length, but added he would not be against adding an additional requirement of no Sunday hunting in light of the longer season.

Moore reminded the board he was not in favor of the longer length in that it would allow hunters to be outside when daylight hours were longer. He said the longer hunting length would allow children to be outside playing after school while hunters were out.

After the options were weighed and a few moments of silence set in, Town Manager Scott Buffkin asked the board if anyone had a motion they wanted to make to move the proceedings along. Andy Green reiterated he was in favor of the longer season, and made a motion to allow the maximum number of hunting days but prohibit Sunday hunting.

The motion passed.
