BOONVILLE - The new-look Lady Rams dropped two tough decisions to open the 2013 season.

After replacing the entire coaching staff and filling the voids left by five key seniors, Starmount fell to Surry Central and Ashe County on back-to-back nights to kick off the season.

Against the Golden Eagles, an eight-run third inning powered Central to a 13-7 victory.

Wake Forest volleyball signee Ashton Gregory cranked a second-inning home run in her first at-bat of the season to lead the Lady Rams offensively, who mounted a seventh-inning rally that fell short.

Five errors doomed Starmount, as the Rams out-hit Central 11-9.

Friday night in the Mountain Valley Conference opener, defense and pitching dominated the game as Ashe County picked up the hard-fought 1-0 victory in Boonville.

Freshman Brianna McCoy out-dueled fellow freshman Olivia Greene in the circle to lead the Huskies. Each pitcher recorded nine strikeouts as Ashe picked up the lone run on a Starmount error in the fourth.

The Rams only managed two hits against McCoy on a frigid night, both off the bat of catcher Madeline Nixon.

Starmount had a shot at the game-tying run in the home-half of the seventh after putting runners on first and third with nobody out. But the Huskies worked out of the jam to pick up the 2A conference victory early in the year.

The Rams (0-2, 0-1) return to the field Tuesday night against the surprising red-hot Lady Elks in softball’s rendition of the Battle of the Bridge.
