Michael Elliott reached the championship finals in the 2A state tournament at 145 pounds, but came up short to an undefeated opponent.

Elliott’s tournament started by pinning Justin Harrell of St. Paul’s at the 1:05 mark of the match. In the quarterfinals, Elliott pinned Northside’s Matthew Lafferty at 3:29.

Elliott’s opponent in the semifinals was Alex Guevara from Trinity. Guevara held a 45-4 overall record entering the tournament. Elliott, who started the tournament with w 43-1 record, beat Guevara by a 9-3 decision to set up a championship match with one of the top 2A wrestlers in the state at any weight class.

The championship match featured Elliott against Chase High School’s Josh Stephens, who entered the tournament with a perfect 48-0 record. Stephens came away with a 10-8 decision victory to capture the title.

Elliott, a junior, will have another shot next year to bring home a state championship.

Ashe had three other grapplers make the state tournament in Greensboro this past weekend, all of them seniors.

At 170 pounds, Lucas Miller was the top seed from the midwest regional. Miller won his first round match by a 17-0 technical fall against Kelvin King of Beddingfield HS. In the quarterfinals, Charles D. Owen grappler Cole Leighton beat Miller by a 3-1 decision in overtime.

In the 170-pound consolation bracket, Miller lost yet another overtime decision, this one by a 14-9 score to Cody Shook from Bunker Hill.

Justin Scarborough appeared in the tournament at the third seed from the midwest regional, but made it all the way to the semifinals. Scarborough beat Collin Minor from Newton-Conover by a 6-5 decision in the first round, then followed that with a 12-10 decision win over Beddingfield’s Alex Jones, who was the top seeded grappler from the east region.

Scarborough faced off against North Surry’s Levi Slate in the semifinals, but was pinned at the 3:13 mark of the match. The senior ended up with a fourth place finish overall.

The final Ashe wrestler in the state tournament was William Miller. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury that he had battled for a large part of the season proved to be too much to overcome as he had to forfeit the first round match after winning the 2A Midwest Regional last weekend.
