Yadkin County Arts Council’s spring and summer event Arts On Main will return to downtown Yadkinville this May but with a face lift and a name change.

The monthly event will feature a variety of activities that cater to everyone from school age children to their parents. The committee also decided to change the event title from Arts On Main to Third Fridays in Yadkinville.

This year the arts council formed a committee to head up the monthly event. Jim Drum, a Yadkinville resident and former owner of Jim Drum Photography Unlimited, is acting as chairman of the committee and pulled together a group of community leaders and business representatives to try to make the event more well rounded.

Drum said that he wanted to make sure that the committee included younger members of the community that could provide feedback on what would draw their age group out to the event.

The committee is made up with representatives from the Town of Yadkinville, Yadkin County Chamber of Commerce, Surry Community College’s Yadkin Center, Yadkinville Police Department, The Yadkin Ripple and the Yadkin County Arts Council.

After several meetings the committee has decided that this year the event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the third Friday of May, June, July and August and that each month will feature a theme.

Kicking off on May 17 and will be College Night. This month will feature live music, corn hole tournaments, Dance Central tournaments, a planned appearance by a Yadkin resident playing for a varsity college sports team, arts activities for kids and more events to come.

June 21 will be Family Night. This month will focus on family friendly activities. There will be a magic show, a picture booth, DJ on site, corn hole tournament, Dance Central tournaments, a watermelon seed-spitting contest, art activities and more.

Pirate Night will be the theme for July 19. Much like it sounds the event will encourage pirate costumes and even talking like a pirate. There will be a contest for the best pirate attire interpretation, a peg legged race, special photos, a treasure hunt with prizes, a Jimmy Buffet cover band, corn hole tournament and Dance Central tournament.

The final Third Friday event for the year will be Dogs Days of Summer on August 16. This will be a chance for the community to gather together with each other and their four legged friends.

Carmen Headen, president of the Yadkin County Humane Society, is heading up this particular event and plans to host a dog parade, costume pageant and more dog themed activities. There will also be a variety of vendors offering dog-related items for sale.

August will also host the end of the Third Friday corn hole and Dance Central tournaments and crown the reigning champs for both.

The committee has created a Facebook page dedicated to the Third Friday events. You can learn more about event specifics by visiting www.facebook.com/ThirdFridaysInYadkinville.
