Ashe County traveled to Wilkes Central on Wednesday for the tennis team’s season opener. The Eagles defended its home court, beating the Huskies, 9-0.
The Huskies started the season replacing four of the six ranked players from last year’s team.
“Sam Bowers and Lucas Zeller are the only returning top seeds from last year,” said head coach Larry Dix. “The other players are new to the top seed lineup or are new tennis players.”
Central top seed Garrett Lakey beat Bowers in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Second seed Duncan Trawick needed a third set tiebreak win over Zeller after winning the first set, 6-3, but falling to Zeller 4-6 in the second set. In the tiebreaker, Trawick held on for a 10-6 victory.
In the battle of third seeded players, Karlik Patel beat Ashe’s Een Shepherd, 6-1, 6-2.
Central captured victories in the three remaining singles matches as well. Kevin Reynolds beat Andrew Shepherd, Pat Archibald beat Jacob O’Neal and Krishna Tiwari beat Jake Harrington, all by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.
In doubles action, Lakey and Trawick beat Bowers and Zeller, 8-1. Patel and Archibald handled Een and Andrew Shepherd, 8-0 and the duo of Reynolds and Tiwari beat O’Neal and Harrington, 8-0.
“They played well against a strong team,” said Coach Dix. “It will be a building year for us and I look forward to developing this team and players.”
Next on the schedule, Ashe is set to have a pair of home matches. The Huskies hosted Starmount on Monday and will play East Wilkes on Tuesday.
