The West Yadkin Fire Department was awarded with a $2,500 check from the Monsanto Fund.

The donation comes as a result of Yadkin County farmer Kevin Long winning the third annual Farmers Grow Communities award. Long was allowed to choose any organization to donate the money to.

“I live in the West Yadkin district and these boys spend a lot of their own time that they don’t get paid for and it’s a big thing,” Long said. “I see them out at the departmentt all the time.”

The department is not sure what the exact use of the money will be yet but they plan to put it towards fire safety.

“We’re going to try to use this money with another grant so in essence we’ve doubled the money,” said Link King, West Yadkin Fire Department president.

Fire Chief Kenneth Dowell said that this money comes at an opportune time because the department’s budget continues to be cut each year and the costs of running the department are not coming down.

“We’re just starting on the budget this year and we’ve had to cut things that are important and this will help us put some of those programs back in,” Chief Dowell said. “It’s great and we really appreciate it.”

The Monsanto Fund was established in 1964 and claims to be the leader in innovative and sustainable agriculture. The fund provides education to farming communities around the world and supports the development of schools, libraries, science centers, farmer training programs and academic program.

The fund also provides support to nonprofit organizations with services like food security, sanitation, access to clean water, public safety and other local needs.
