BOONVILLE - The Starmount boys and East Wilkes girls dropped their state playoff openers Monday night, ending the season for all area hoops teams.

Starmount drew a tough matchup against Piedmont (21-5) in the first round.

The Panthers jumped all over the Rams early, scoring 27 points in the opener quarter, grabbing a 27-10 lead at the end of one.

Piedmont led 42-14 at the break as Starmount was out-manned and out-sized against the Panthers.

Zack Worley paced the Rams with a dozen points and four rebounds in his final high school game and was the player to finish in double-figures. Luke Shore added six points, while Gunner Cass and James Ashley scored five points apiece.

East Wilkes drew a familiar foe in the opening round, meeting county rival West Wilkes for the third time this season.

The Lady Cardinals gave the Blackhawks all they could handle in a back-and-forth contest.

West, who only led 21-19 at halftime, used a big third-quarter burst to jump ahead by 10 at 41-31.

In the fourth, the ‘Hawks put the finishing touches on the 59-53 victory to advance to the second round.

Erin Royal poured in a game-high 19 points in her final high school game, while Jada McCrimmon tacked on nine.
