Chaise Swisher, an Elkin High School career and technical education (CTE) teacher, recently received a grant for $1,000 from Duke Energy.

Swisher commented that he was not actively searching for grants, but a fellow teacher forwarded him the email, and he saw it as a great opportunity. He described it as situation in which he was “in the right place at the right time.”

Career and technical education classes like those Swisher teaches are popular among students at Elkin High. Evelyn Sanchez, a junior, commented, “CTE classes are great because I enjoy working on projects and using technology. I like knowing I am learning real-world skills that I will use later in a career.”

CTE courses offer skills needed in the workplace after graduation. In particular, Swisher’s classes focus on STEM: science, technology, engineering, and math. Since that focus often requires hands-on tactics to teach, many supplies are required.

Swisher plans on using the grant to buy some of the many materials needed for his classes. Without the grant money, he would have had to teach students by using less interactive methods, such as lecturing.

Swisher commented that he is deeply grateful to Barbara Long and Patsy Burgess, colleagues at Elkin High, for helping him write the grant application. He also appreciates the opportunity Duke Energy offered by financing the grant.
