Local artist Stephen Shoemaker plans to release a book about his life in the High Country titled Stephen Shoemaker: the Paintings and Their Stories.
“The book is basically about growing up in West Jefferson,” said Shoemaker. The tale will be told through stories and paintings from Shoemaker. He also said “it’s stories most people can identify with.”
This project has been a joint effort between Shoemaker and Janet Pittard. Pittard, a former writer for Our State Magazine, has helped Shoemaker write the stories featured in the book. Shoemaker called Pittard an “excellent writer.”
Shoemaker said he was thrilled when McFarland Books in West Jefferson agreed to publish the book.
“We’ve been working on it for about two years now, maybe more, and for McFarland to publish the book is icing on the cake,” said Shoemaker.
“Publishing a book is a big deal; I didn’t realize how many tight ropes you have to walk and how many hoops you have to jump through. Janet really took the bull by the horns,” said Shoemaker.
Even though the release date is not certain, Lisa Camp, the managing editor at McFarland, said the book will be released sometime in February.
Camp also said McFarland is planning a launch for the book to accompany the release. The book’s launch will include an open event for the public to meet Shoemaker.
Copies of Stephen Shoemaker: the Painting and Their Stories can be ordered before or after its release at McFrland Books in West Jefferson.
