Ray Douglas Gardner, 78, residing at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky, passed away Saturday, December 29, 2012. Ray was born, January 1, 1934, to Glenn W Gardner and Juanita Blanche Ayers Gardner in Dugspur, Virginia. He moved to Ohio as a young man. Ray joined the United States Army where he served as a cannon crewmember and a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division. He loved the Army and serving his country. Throughout his life, Ray worked as a truck driver and for the City of Hudson, Ohio. After retirement he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and Port Charlotte, Florida. Ray loved his hometown of Hillsville/Dugspur Virginia. He liked to attend the Old Fiddlers Convention every year in Galax. He liked bluegrass music, flea markets, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Ray is survived by his children and their spouses; James Gardner (Marla), Ray Gardner, II (Julie), Doug Gardner (Susan), Kay Gardner King (Don). His grandchildren; Brandon, Ava, Natalie, Ray Gardner, III., Megan, Stephen, Kendeigh (her husband, Ross), Katy (her fiancée, Jared), Jeremy Gardner and Cody Gardner. A great grandson, Caiden, and great granddaughter, Alison, also survive him. His great friends, Don Petak and Larry Gaiser also survive him along with several cousins and other relatives. In addition to his parents and grand parents, his brothers Lincoln and Denny and his sister, Betty, preceded him in death. At Ray’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral services. Cremation has taken place and he will be taken back to his hometown in Virginia, where he used to play as a boy. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio Veterans Home, 3416 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870 or to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870. The family would like to extend their many thanks to the staff at Stein Hospice and the Ohio Veterans Home for the excellent care Ray received.
