Ashe battled hard for four quarters against the Pioneers, but could not pull off the upset, falling 43-32.

Watauga held a slim 19-18 lead at halftime, much different than when the teams met previously in Boone. Watauga jumped to a huge lead and was never tested down the stretch.

This time around, Ashe was going to give its rival all they could.

The Pioneers went to the fourth quarter with a 28-27 lead, leaving Ashe right there in stricking distance.

The Huskies continued playing solid defense, but the offense just was not there in the fourth quarter as Watauga outscored the home team 15-5 to take the 11-point win.

Jordan Spell was Ashe’s high scorer with eight points and three steals. Matthew Lee added six points and four rebounds while fellow junior Cullen Ashley scored six points and led all Husky players with five rebounds.

Johnathan Cox scored four points, Eli Gambill added three, Seth Sheets scored three and Alex Laws added two points.

Senior Anderson Moore had to leave the game with an injury sustained diving after a lose ball. Moore would not return.

West Wilkes 48, Ashe 39

The Huskies wrapped up the first half of the Mountain Valley Conference schedule with a road game at West Wilkes on Friday.

Much like the Watauga game, Ashe was step-for-step with its opponent for three quarters, but struggled to find its groove in the fourth.

The game was tied at 14 at the half before West Wilkes moved out in front by three after the third quarter. The Blackhawks outscored Ashe 13-7 in the fourth to pull away.

Spell was the leading scorer again. The senior scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds. Gambill dropped in seven points and led the team with six rebounds. Cox scored six, Zach Lawrence added five and Lee finished with four. Ashley and Sheets scored three each and Devan Sheets rounded out the Ashe scoring with three.

The Huskies are 4-1 overall and 3-5 in the MVAC.

Ashe will have Tuesday off this week before hosting rival Wilkes Central on Friday.
