A Bad Year for Tomatoes

It may have been a bad year for tomatoes, according to a message from the Foothills Art Council, but they’re seeding up for a great night of comedy in Elkin.

“The Foothills Theatre’s dessert theater production of ‘A Bad Year for Tomatoes’ will be held on Jan. 18-20 and Elkin First Baptist Church fellowship hall,” said Leighanne Martin Wright, executive director of the Foothills Arts Council, who’s doubling as the director for the production.

Written by John Patrick, the play stars Kitsey Burns of East Bend, Morgan Harrison of Elkin, Vicky Zickmund of Mocksville, Sarah Moxley of Boonville, Kirsten Nielsen of Elkin, David Nielsen of Elkin and Neil Green of Elkin.

When Myra Marlowe flees Hollywood to escape the pressures and demands of her acting career, she leases a house in a tiny New England hamlet known as Beaver Haven. There she settles down to write her autobiography.

Seeking tranquility, and in part, some isolation, Marlowe discovers that life is anything but.

In an attempt to shoo her nosey and pesky neighbors, Reba, Cora, Willa Mae and Piney, away from the house, Marlowe invents a mad, homicidal sister who is kept locked in an upstairs room, but who occasionally escapes long enough to scare off uninvited visitors.

The ruse works well, at first, but complications result when the local handyman develops an affection for “Sister Sadie” (really Myra in a wig), and other Christians in the community take quest to save the poor demented Sadie’s soul.

In desperation Myra announces that her imaginary sibling has suddenly gone off to Boston, which in return compounds the problem by causing the sheriff to investigate Marlowe for the suspicion of murder.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18 and 19, and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20 at Elkin First Baptist Church’s fellowship hall. Tickets will be $10 and available at the door. Dessert, coffee and tea will be served then the curtain will follow.

To celebrates its 45th season on stage in Elkin, Foothills Theatre will be holding a second dessert theater production in April with “A Savage Dilemma,” the sequel to last year’s “The Curious Savage.” This summer the community theater group will be presenting “Oliver!” at Elkin High School’s Dixon Auditorium. For dates and audition information, see the group’s page at the arts council’s website, www.foothillsartscouncil.org.
