On Jan. 14, a kick-off celebration will be held at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Elkin from 6-8 p.m. for the American Cancer Society’s annual fundraiser, Relay For Life, which will be held in Elkin in May.

Individuals, families, community groups, corporations and small businesses who are committing their Relay For Life team are invited to attend and sign up.

The Relay for Life is a 12-hour overnight event when teams assemble and relay to help raise money to fight cancer. The event will be held on May 3rd at Elkin High School starting at 6 p.m. and ending 6 a.m. am the next morning. It’s routine for participants to keep at least one team member in the relay during the entire evening and early morning hours.

The Relay for Life is the major volunteer-driven fundraising event, according to the American Cancer Society. They state it has raised billions of dollars since its founding in 1985.

Locally, the event raised $44,512 last year with 19 teams registered, according to Angie H Wagoner, community manager of the Alleghany and Surry County Division for the American Cancer Society, Inc. This year, the cancer fighting organization is striving for a new goal of $52,500 and hopes to get 26 teams.

“Just as the effects of a challenging economy are felt by families in every community, cancer, too, has a far-reaching impact,” said Wagoner. “No matter how the stock market is performing or what the current unemployment rate may be, there are still many people battling a cancer diagnosis and many others who are lending support alongside loved ones every day.”

According to the association, local volunteers are a huge part of a nationwide effort to save lives from cancer, but additional people are needed for the progress to continue.

“The money raised at Relay enables the American Cancer Society to deliver on its mission of helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures and fighting back against the disease,” continued Wagoner to The Tribune. “The Relay provides the Society with money to support vital, cutting-edge cancer research, publishes lifesaving literature on cancer prevention, detection and tobacco control, and develops a new generation of medicines that help those battling cancer.”
