On October 27, the Elkin High School Cheerleading Squad sponsored its first ever Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and raised more than nine hundred dollars.

Kali Teague, varsity cheerleading coach, said that plans and preparation for the walk began at the beginning of October and lasted the whole month. Inspiration to host such an event hit very close to home for some of the cheerleaders.

“Many of the girls on our team have family members who have been touched by breast cancer, and we wanted to do something that would give back to our community as well as raise awareness for this disease,” said Teague.

The Elkin High School cheerleaders worked from the ground up when it came to spreading the word about their walk, which included hanging pink ribbon posters around the school and hosting two “Pink Out” days, during which the whole student body was urged to wear as much pink as possible.

Clubs at Elkin High School were also involved, especially “Bucky’s Club.” Bucky’s Club was created by senior student Houston Parks to encourage fellow students to recognize and appreciate the importance of good character and community service in today’s society. Club dues were all donated to the breast cancer fund set up by the cheerleading team.

Registration for the walk began on October 27 at 9 a.m. at Elkin High School’s Grissom Stadium, with the actual walk beginning around 10:30 a.m.

Booths were set up by the cheerleaders, offering pink ribbon-themed crafts, food, and face painting. Local businesses also lent a hand in the event, with food donated by Speedy Chef, Pepsi, and Dominos. Raffles were held with items donated by Diana’s Bookstore, The Difference Salon, and La Fuente Mexican restaurant. Music was provided by the Elkin High School Band. By the end of the day, a total of $956.31 had been raised.

Later, a check was presented in that amount to Diana Parrish, Executive Director of the Susan G. Komen Triad Affiliate, which helps to fund mammograms and makes them more affordable for women in the Triad area.

Elkin High School junior and varsity cheerleader Kristen Kartes said that it was an amazing experience.

“It was just really cool to help raise money for such a great cause. When we took the money to Winston-Salem to donate to the Susan G. Komen foundation, it was great to see the facial expressions of all the workers there when they saw how much money we had raised. It really paid off because they told us how many people that it would help, even locally.”

Coach Teague said she is proud of not only the unselfish service performed by the girls, but also by what they learned about their role in our society.

“I think what these girls learned the most from this experience is that they are… more than just cheerleaders; they are role models for other girls to look up to,” she said.
