Newtown, Ct. is about 650 miles away from Elkin, but we still feel a strong connection to the family members of the children and teachers who were murdered on Friday.
All of us who are parents don’t need to be reminded to hug our children a little tighter, to enjoy them sitting on our laps a little more, and to tell them we love them a few more times than we usually do. When we learned about the horrific massacre in the Connecticut elementary school, we appreciated our families more and were so thankful our children and family members are safe.
We can stop for a moment and be reminded that so many other things in life don’t matter nearly that much.
The growth of the economy, the shopping spree for Christmas presents, the fiscal cliff — all these things we’ve been hearing about so much in the news — really have hardly any significance.
There are those who will want to start discussing the politics of gun control, and both sides are already making their arguments. Let’s put the politics aside for a while.
Let’s spend a little more time enjoying our families. And while we do that, let’s not forget to pray for the families of those 20 children and six adults.
