ELKIN - In the opening game of the hardwood Battle of the Bridge double-header, Starmount’s Heaven Walters put on a clinic.
Walters, who signed her letter of intent last month to play at Guilford College next season, poured in 30 points on the night to power the Lady Rams to the convincing 57-40 victory over rival Elkin.
Playing without Courtney Beals, a Mountain Valley Conference honorable mention a year ago, Elkin head coach Derek Carter used a combination of younger players to fill the void. And for a half, the Lady Elks held their own.
Starmount and Elkin battled in a back-and-forth first half as the Lady Rams took a 22-20 lead in the locker room.
But coming out of the break, Starmount outscored its rival 35-20 in the second half to turn the two-point halftime lead into a runaway triumph.
Walters scored 16 points in the half to power the young Lady Rams to their second conference victory of the sason.
“It was a nice first half, girls felt good. We just cannot put it all together,” Carter said. “I’m still waiting on the girls to just play - we always seem like we’re a half-step behind, like we’re thinking. I’ll be glad when we’re healthy.
“I tried a different combination tonight and it worked for two quarters or three quarters. We changed a few things to get the offense going. We’ll just keep digging,” he added.
Darion Dobson finished with nine points for Starmount, while Morgan Randleman added eight. Makayla Dimmette led Elkin with 11 points in the game, while Carrie Brown finished with nine. Kaitlin Faw tacked on seven points with Cassidy Cook adding six.
With the win, Starmount improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the MVAC, while Elkin fell to 0-10 on the season and 0-3 in the conference.
Both squads are taking Tuesday off for final exams and will return to action Friday night. Starmount travels to Moravian Falls to take on Wilkes Central, while Elkin heads to Ronda to battle East Wilkes.
Starmount head coach Doug Chilton missed Friday night’s game.
