EAST BEND - Both Forbush basketball squads have struggled to open the 2012-13 season to strong Northwest Conference opponents.

The Falcons were swept by Surry Central in a double-header last Monday to tip off the season.

The boys battled from behind to take a 42-40 lead early in the fourth quarter. But the Golden Eagles hit critical free throws to escape with the 57-52 victory in Dobson.

In the girls matchup, Surry Central opened on a 10-0 run and breezed to a 67-40 victory. Starmount transfer Brittany Moose led the way with 14 points for the Falcons, while Savannah Hill added seven points.

Against tough East Surry squads, the Falcons were blown out in the first round of the Mt. Airy Thanksgiving Tournament this past weekend.

The Lady Falcons fell behind early and dropped a 62-42 decision. In the boys game, Forbush ran into a hot-shooting Cardinal team and could not keep pace. East shot 66 percent from the floor and breezed to a 73-34 victory.

In the final matchups of the holiday tournament, the Falcons fell to host Mt. Airy 67-48 before the Forbush girls lost 63-44.

Both teams return to action Friday night in the home opener against West Stokes.
