Major progress can be seen at the Liberty building in downtown Elkin.

Located at 222 East Main St., the property is being redesigned for a microbrewery, banquet hall, wine shop, restaurant, and tenant space. Also, in the past two weeks, the entire framing in the interior of the building has been completed.

“We’re done with the framing of the different rooms and spaces, and now we’re just working on installing all the HVAC equipment,” said Cicely McCulloch, owner of Diana’s Bookstore and Coffee Shop in downtown Elkin. McCulloch bought the Liberty property a year and a half ago.

The Tribune first reported that McCulloch originally planned to open the building in May, but progress has gone slower than anticipated. McCulloch and her builders, GARANCO Inc. general contractors of Pilot Mountain, have now slated the open date for March of 2013.

Although the building is being renovated, original traits have been kept including pine floors, windows, brick work, wood trusses, and open rafters.

“The builders have done the framing so quickly, and it’s a huge and noticeable change, but soon things will calm down again and it will just be the boring stuff left to do like electrical, plumbing, and HVAC, while we wait for the doors to come in,” McCulloch said.

As soon as the “boring stuff” is complete, McCulloch said tenants will be able to begin designing their spaces on the interior.

“We’re just hoping for quick turn-around on what’s left and hopefully things will stay on track and it will be ready and open this spring,” McCulloch said.
