Carroll County capped off an otherwise disappointing season on Nov. 2 at Tommy Thompson Field by totally dominating winless Patrick County to the tune of 43-6.

“I’m very happy we can end it like this. We’ve got a fantastic group of players, a fantastic group of seniors,” said Cavaliers Head Coach Tom Hale. “If you would have asked before the start of the season if we’d end up 2-8, I’d said no way. We just didn’t get the right bounces.”

Although the Cavaliers struggled at times this season, Hale said a lot of that was due to youth.

“We have a lot of underclassmen coming back. We started one freshman and more sophomores than I can count. We have a great nucleus of kids coming back next year.”

Carroll County rolled up 478 yards of total offense in the game, while limiting Patrick to just 118. The Cavaliers’ passing game accounted for 273 yards of offense, with the combination of Connor Lundy to Chris Smoot accounting for six completions, 167 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively, Smoot had an interception, as did Taylor Case, Daniel Wolford and Duncan Reece. Case also recovered a fumble.

The game had plenty of excitement, as well as turnovers and penalties. Carroll lost four of seven fumbles, while Patrick lost two of three fumbles and threw four interceptions. The Cougars were penalized 11 times for 103 yards, while the Cavaliers were flagged 12 times for 131 yards.

Carroll drove 69 yards on the opening drive of the game to score. Lundy and Smoot hooked up for a 30-yard gain on the second play of the nine-play drive and finished it off with a 5-yard scoring pass. Lundy then hit Kody Alley with a pass for the two-point conversion.

After forcing a Patrick punt, Carroll needed just five plays to score again. Lundy opened the drive with a 19-yard pass to Alley and two plays later Josh Blankenship picked up 17 yards. Lundy completed the scoring drive with a 3-yard scoring toss to Smoot.

The Cavaliers got a break when the Cougars fumbled the kickoff. Case recovered for Carroll at the Patrick 32. However, five plays later after moving to the 8-yard line, the Cavaliers coughed up the ball.

Two quick touchdowns in the second quarter put Carroll in a commanding position. The Cavaliers drove 79 yards in just six plays for the first score. Ethan Underwood had an 11-yard run and Josh Blankenship a 25-yard scamper to kick off the drive, and Alley finished it off with a 19-yard scoring run. After the Cavaliers’ Daniel Wolford picked off a Patrick pass, Carroll needed just one play to score again, this one coming on a 60-yard pass from Lundy to Smoot.

After the two teams exchanged fumbles, Patrick got its only score of the night when Zach Tickle scored on a 1-yard plunge.

Carroll then finished off the first-half scoring by driving 55 yards in seven plays. Lundy hit Alley for an 18-yard gain, Case for a 14-yard pickup and Smoot with a 30-yarder before Jake Dillon took it in for the touchdown from eight yards out.

The Cavaliers took a 40-6 lead on their opening drive of the second half, going 35 yards in eight plays. Lundy picked up the touchdown, going in from one-yard out.

Halen then called off the horses, giving his second-unit players some needed experience. Still, the Cavaliers managed to tack on another score when Chase Goins hit a 31-yard field goal with five minutes remaining in the game.

Following the game, Hale addressed his team’s move to the powerhouse River Ridge District next year.

“We’ll be playing the top teams in the state of Virginia, week-in and week-out,” said Hale. “My major concern is a school of our size has got to get more kids involved in the football program. We’ve got to have more depth and more numbers.”
