WEST JEFFERSON - The Falcons were unable to build on last week’s win over East Wilkes, falling to an explosive Ashe County side 33-10 Friday night in West Jefferson.
After jumping out to a 3-0 lead on an Alex Torres 30-yard field goal in the first, the Huskies scored 20 second-quarter points en route to 33 unanswered points to put the game out reach.
Jordan Sawyers added a late touchdown, as the Falcons dropped to 1-8 on the season and 1-6 in the rugged Mountain Valley Conference.
Sawyers continues to be the workhorse head coach Chris Johnson expected from his sophomore tailback, rushing for 166 yards on the night on 31 carries. The sophomore has rushed over 110 yards in each of the past three games, including a season-high 170 yards against East Wilkes last week.
Bennett Winslow and Matthew Stanley added 18 and 16 yards on the ground, respectively, as Forbush topped the 200-yard rushing mark for the game.
Sawyers was a force on the defensive side of the ball as well, recording a team-high eight tackles with Cody Shrewsbury adding seven and a sack. Tyler Holden and Todd Patterson pitched in with six each.
Forbush returns to the field Friday night in its season finale matchup with Elkin in East Bend. The Falcons look to play spoiler on Senior Night as the Elks fight for the top 1A seed out of the MVAC.
