The Surry County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating a shooting in State Road that occurred shortly before midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

The initial reports said that Robin Key, 45, of 572 Burcham Road, State Road, had gun shot wounds to the stomach and the initial 911 call at 11:51 p.m. came in from her husband, Brian Key, 41, stating that his wife had shot herself in the stomach with a handgun, according to a sheriff’s office release. Sheriff Atkinson said she later gave a statement while being transported to Baptist Hospital that her husband had shot her.

Key underwent surgery at Baptist Hospital and has now said the wound was self-inflicted.

“We went and spoke with her in Baptist Hospital after her surgeries and she said it was self-inflicted,” said detective Jeremy Luffman.

Sheriff Atkinson said she is still in the hospital recovering from surgeries.

“There will be no charges against her husband, Brian Key,” Atkinson said.
