Three Ashe County seniors went out on a high note on Senior Day with a 9-0 victory over the visiting West Wilkes Blackhawks.
Haley Maloney, Anna Wooten and Hayley Ragland were honored before the match in their final home match of the 2012 regular season.
The top four seeds for Ashe won their matches without allowing their opponents to win a single game in either set. Wooten was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Karoline Minton. Maloney captured a 6-0, 6-0 win against Jenna Roten. Maggie Witherspoon and Mary Austin Tugman were both 6-0, 6-0 winners over Michelle Minton and Alexia Shumate.
In the battle of fifth seeded players, Ragland took down Alexe Bumgarner in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 and Ella Copeland completed the singles matches with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Taylor Lewis.
In doubles action, Wooten and Maloney remained undefeated with an 8-0 win over Roten and M. Minton. The duo has not lost a conference match or non-conference match all season long. Witherspoon and Tugman took an 8-0 victory against K. Minton and Bumgarner while Ragland and Copeland finished off the sweep with an 8-0 win against Shumate and Lewis.
“I think the ladies played very well, particularly since we have not played since last week and rain interrupted some of our outside practice time,” said head coach Larry Dix.
With this win, Ashe notched its 10th Mountain Valley Conference victory.
Ashe turned right around and traveled to North Wilkes on Thursday and picked up an 8-1 victory.
The Lady Huskies claimed wins in five of the six singles matches. Wooten was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Leia Pruitt. Maloney’s victory over Bethany Wagoner featured a 6-1 win in the first set, then a 6-3 win in the second set.
In the battle of third seeded players, Witherspoon beat Kaytlin Garcia in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.
The final two singles wins went to Ragland and Copeland. Ragland earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Lauren Handy and Copeland won a tiebreaker in the first set 9-7, then took the second set 6-4 over Michaela Johnson.
All three doubles matches went down as Ashe County victories. Wooten and Maloney were 8-0 winners, Tugman and Ragland were 8-6 winners and Witherspoon and Hallie Brown, who can only play doubles matches due to her knee injury, were 8-0 winners.
The Lady Huskies moved to 11-4 in conference play. Ashe finished the regular season on Friday evening at Starmount in a match that was rescheduled due to rain. No score was available as of press time.
